How to measure your bag
Pack the bag as you would for the trip, then measure the tallest point, the widest point and the deepest point with a tape measure. Include wheels, handles and anything in the outside pockets.
If a soft bag is close to the limit, squash-test it: gate sizers are rigid frames, and a bag that bulges by a couple of centimetres can be refused.
Common questions
What size bag can I take on Ryanair for free?
Ryanair lets every passenger bring one small bag up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm, which must fit under the seat in front of you. A larger 55 × 40 × 20 cm cabin bag up to 10 kg needs Priority & 2 Cabin Bags.
What size is the free easyJet under-seat bag?
easyJet’s free small cabin bag can be up to 45 × 36 × 20 cm including handles and wheels, and up to 15 kg. A large cabin bag of 56 × 45 × 25 cm is paid extra unless you have easyJet Plus or an Inclusive Plus fare.
What is the Wizz Air free bag size?
Wizz Air’s free carry-on bag is 40 × 30 × 20 cm and up to 10 kg, and must fit under the seat. The 55 × 40 × 23 cm trolley bag comes with WIZZ Priority. Wizz doesn’t count handles and wheels, but wheels can add no more than 5 cm.
Is there one bag size that works on every airline here?
A bag no bigger than 40 × 30 × 15 cm fits the free under-seat allowance on all six airlines in this checker. At 40 × 30 × 20 cm it fits everyone except the British Airways hand bag, which is 15 cm deep.
Do wheels and handles count in the size?
On most airlines, yes. easyJet, Jet2 and British Airways say their limits include wheels and handles. Wizz Air is the exception, allowing wheels to add up to 5 cm. The safest approach is to measure the whole bag, wheels and all.
Does it matter which way round I measure?
No. The checker compares your longest side with the airline’s longest limit, and so on, so it doesn’t matter which number you type as height, width or depth.
Should I measure my bag empty or packed?
Packed. Soft bags bulge when full, and gate sizers check the bag as you carry it. Measure it with everything inside, including any front pockets you plan to fill.
Can the airline still refuse my bag if the checker says it fits?
Yes. Gate staff decide using their own sizer frames, and airlines change their rules. Treat this as a quick check, and look at your airline’s website before you fly.
