Combi or System Boiler? How to Pick the Right Smart Thermostat

A quick check of your boiler type, and what it means for hot water control, wiring and which smart thermostat to buy.

Published: Updated:

Quick answer

If you have no hot water cylinder (tank) and hot water comes straight from the boiler, you have a combi boiler, and almost any smart thermostat for heating will do. If you have a hot water cylinder, you have a system or regular boiler, and you need a smart thermostat that also controls hot water, such as the tado starter kits. Check your boiler manual or the label on the front to be sure.

Best smart thermostat UK

Smart thermostats are not one size fits all. The biggest thing that decides which one you need is your boiler type. Get it wrong and you may lose control of your hot water, or buy a thermostat that will not talk to your boiler.

Here is how to check your boiler in a minute, and what to look for in a smart thermostat for each type. For our picks, see the best smart thermostat UK guide.

How to tell which boiler you have

Combi boiler: there is no hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard and no tank in the loft. Hot water comes on as soon as you open a tap. Most UK homes built or updated in the last 20 years have one.

System boiler: there is a hot water cylinder, usually in an airing cupboard, but no water tanks in the loft.

Regular (heat-only) boiler: there is a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. These are common in older homes.

The model name is usually on the front or bottom of the boiler. Search it, or check the manual, if you are not sure.

Smart thermostats for combi boilers

A combi boiler heats water when you need it, so the thermostat only has to control heating. That means you have the most choice, including cheaper models like the Meross and Netatmo in our smart thermostat guide.

Look for OpenTherm support if your boiler has it. It lets the thermostat ask for gentler, lower heat instead of switching on and off, which can help the boiler run more efficiently.

Smart thermostats for system and regular boilers

With a hot water cylinder you also need hot water control, so you can set when the tank heats up. Pick a kit that clearly says it controls hot water, like the tado Wireless Smart Thermostat X or tado V3+ starter kits.

Thermostats sold only for combi boilers, like many Hive Mini and Meross models, will not control your hot water. Check the listing carefully.

What about heat pumps?

Heat pumps work best with long, steady, lower temperature heating. Some smart thermostats, such as tado X and Honeywell T6, list heat pump support. Ask your installer before changing controls, as some heat pumps need the maker controls to keep their warranty.

Adding room-by-room control

Whatever your boiler, you can add smart radiator valves to heat only the rooms you use. Stick to the same brand as your thermostat. See our best smart radiator valves UK guide.

Can I fit it myself?

Many people fit wireless kits themselves, but it usually means working with mains wiring at the boiler or wiring centre. Turn the power off first, and use a qualified electrician or heating engineer if you are unsure. Never open the gas parts of a boiler: only a Gas Safe registered engineer can do that.

Why we give this advice

This explainer is based on maker compatibility information for the smart thermostats in our guide and standard UK boiler types. We have not fitted these thermostats ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

1.Do I have a combi or system boiler?
If you have no hot water cylinder and hot water comes straight from the boiler, it is a combi. If you have a cylinder in a cupboard, it is a system or regular boiler.
2.Will any smart thermostat work with a combi boiler?
Most will, as long as they support standard on/off control. OpenTherm support is a bonus if your boiler has it. Always check the maker compatibility checker.
3.Do I need hot water control on a smart thermostat?
Only if you have a hot water cylinder, which means a system or regular boiler. Combi boilers do not need it.
4.What is OpenTherm?
A way for the thermostat and boiler to talk, so the boiler can run at lower, steadier power instead of just on or off. The tado X and Honeywell T6 in our guide list OpenTherm support.
5.Which smart thermostat is best for a system boiler?
One with hot water control. In our [best smart thermostat UK](/best-smart-thermostat-uk) guide, the tado X and tado V3+ starter kits both control hot water.
